01= A Certain Smile

John Royce "Johnny" Mathis (born September 30, 1935) is an American singer of popular music and jazz. Starting his career with singles of standard music, he became highly popular as an album artist, with several dozen of his albums achieving gold or platinum status and 73 making the Billboard charts to date. Mathis has sold well over 350 million records worldwide, according to Guinness Book of World Records writer and charts music historian Paul Gambaccini and other sources. This makes Mathis the third biggest selling artist of the 20th century.

Although he is frequently described as a romantic singer, his discography includes jazz, traditional pop, Brazilian music, Spanish music, soul music, rhythm and blues, soft rock, Broadway theatre, Tin Pan Alley standards, some blues and country songs, and even a few disco songs for his album Mathis Magic in 1979. Mathis also recorded six albums of Christmas music. In a 1968 interview, Mathis cited Lena Horne, Nat King Cole, and Bing Crosby among his musical influences.

"A Certain Smile" is a popular song. It was written for the 1958 film of the same name, based on the novel, also titled A Certain Smile, by Françoise Sagan. The song was nominated for the 1958 Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The music was written by Sammy Fain with the lyrics by Paul Francis Webster. The song has been covered by artists such as Johnny Mathis, who appeared in the 1958 film as a bar singer who sang the title song. Mathis's recording, with backing orchestration by Ray Ellis and released in June 1958 (4-41193), reached #4 on the UK Singles Chart and #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Astrud Gilberto recorded it for her 1966 album, A Certain Smile, a Certain Sadness.

Jay and the Americans released a version of the song on their 1963 album, At the Cafe Wha?

The song was featured in the 2010 BBC production of "A Passionate Woman."

"The Twelfth of Never" is a popular song recorded by Johnny Mathis and later by other artists, including Cliff Richard and Donny Osmond. The song's title comes from the popular expression "the 12th of Never", which is used as the date of a future occurrence that will never come to pass. In the case of the song, "the 12th of Never" is given as the date on which the singer will stop loving his beloved, thus indicating that he will always love her. The song draws a similar link between the cessation of love and a number of other events expected never to happen.

Mathis initially disliked the song, which was released as the flip side to his number-one hit single "Chances Are".[1]

The song was written by Jerry Livingston and Paul Francis Webster, the tune (except for the bridge) being adapted from "The Riddle Song" (also known as "I Gave My Love a Cherry"), an old English folk song. Mathis's original version reached number 9 on what is now called the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA in 1957. A version by Cliff Richard was released in 1964 and reached number 8 in the UK. Donny Osmond's version, produced by Mike Curb and Don Costa, was his second number 1 single in the UK, spending a single week at the top of the UK Singles Chart in March 1973. In the U.S. it peaked at number 8.

"Chances Are" is a popular song with music by Robert Allen and lyrics by Al Stillman.

It was published in 1957. The song was one of a large number of compositions by the Stillman-Allen team that were chart hits in the 1950s. It was listed on Billboard's "Most Played by Jockeys" survey for Johnny Mathis, charting in 1957, and was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1998.

The song reached No. 4 on Billboard's Best Sellers in Stores survey, along with its flip "The Twelfth of Never", which Mathis initially disliked. It became a gold record. The song was also included on the 1958 Mathis compilation Johnny's Greatest Hits.

Mathis re-recorded the song in 1996 as a duet with Liza Minnelli for her album Gently.

"Misty" is a jazz standard written in 1954 by the pianist Erroll Garner.

Originally composed as an instrumental following the traditional 32-bar format and first recorded for Garner's 1955 album Contrasts, the tune was later paired with lyrics by Johnny Burke and became the signature song of Johnny Mathis, appearing on his 1959 album Heavenly and reaching number 12 on the U.S. Pop Singles chart later that year.

Country and pop singer Ray Stevens had a number 14 hit with his cover version of "Misty" in 1975 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has been recorded many times, including versions by such artists as Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan.

The best known version of the song is probably the Jack Gold produced version for Johnny Mathis. Entitled "When A Child Is Born (Soleado)" with B-side as "Every Time You Touch Me (I Get High)", it became Johnny Mathis' sole number one single in the UK Singles Chart, spending three weeks at the top of the chart in December 1976, and selling 885,000 copies.

In the US, it appeared in the Record World survey in both the Christmas seasons of 1976 and 1977, reaching a maximum position of No. 123, and racking up 10 chart weeks. In addition, Mathis re-recorded the song as a duet with Gladys Knight and the Pips. This version reached Record World No. 137 during the Christmas season of 1980, and the UK Singles Chart at No. 79.
