The New Trolls are an Italian progressive rock band. Among their works are some of the milestones of the genre, such as the famous Concerto Grosso for the New Trolls. At the end of the seventies the production of the group moved towards more pop-rock sound, while maintaining some of the distinctive characteristics of progressive like the elaborate arrangements, the technical virtuosity of the performances and the very structured polyphonic singers.

The first formation of the group, simply known as Trolls, was born in Genoa in 1966 from an idea of Pino Scarpettini (keyboards) and Vittorio De Scalzi (vocals and guitar). The group also appeared Ugo Guido (bass and vocals), Julius Menin (drums) and Piero Darini (guitar and vocals). Under the name "The Trolls" the group recorded for the label His Master's Voice, 45 laps behind the fog (B side tonight). Followed, again in 1966, Cherish and the world you want and other cover but with a different line and without De Scalzi.

In 1972, D'Adamo left the band, replaced by Frank Laugelli. Also Maurizio Salvi became in this period a permanent member of the New Trolls. In 1972, with this lineup the band released two albums: Searching for a land and Ut.

For some disagreements arose during the recording of Ut, between 1973 and 1976 the band members devoted themselves to some side projects: Di Palo, Laugelli, Salvi and Belleno released the album Songs of innocence of experience singing while De barefoot and D'Adamo gave birth to the New Trolls Atomic System with Tullio De Piscopo on drums, Renato Rosset on keyboards, Giorgio Baiocco on horns, Ramasandiran Somusundaran on percussion, recording two albums.

Also at this time De Scalzi is dedicated record activity, founding the Magma label, based in Genoa and distribution handled by Memories Discs.

Palo form then the Ibis, which released two albums. In the first album he included the formation Di Palo, Laugelli, Salvi and the English drummer Rick Parnell (coming from Atomic Rooster; the second included Di Palo, Laugelli, drummer Pasquale Venditto and Renzo Tortora guitarist.

The Belleno drummer, finally, with Di Palo, Laugelli and Salvi, gave birth to a "ghost" group, the Tritons, with whom he came in the standings thanks to a reinterpretation of the famous (I Can not Get No) Satisfaction The Rolling Stones .

After the publication of a new collection, entitled (as a previous work of 1969) just New Trolls, and the participation of Belleno and D'Adamo to tour by Fabrizio De André, the group back together in 1976 with the entrance of guitarist Ricky Belloni (from the group New Idea and toured with De André along with bassist and drummer) and the return of Di Palo. With this new element of the New Trolls released Concerto Grosso No. 2 (1976); although not reaching the success of the first Concerto grosso, this work was well received by audiences and critics.

In the mid-seventies Di Palo had to leave for health reasons, and while remaining formally a member of the group ceased to participate actively in recordings and live performances; this is the period in which he began working with the group Giorgio Usai, former keyboardist of New Ideas. Meanwhile, the New Trolls dedicated themselves to the creation of a double album by Ornella Vanoni, I in, I out (1977), which was followed by a successful tour. The official record production of the band had a new short period of arrest, filled by the publication of a live album (Live, 1976) and a collection (Revival, 1977).

In 1978 came two more big hits, the individual That caress of the evening and his back Aldebaran, and the Aldebaran album.

In 1979 he sang the theme song of Luna Park television show hosted by Pippo Baudo, with a song in pure disco style, We too. That same year participated in Dear Dad, starring Vittorio Gassman and made light of some reasons included in the film.

In this period is published only for the Spanish market, the album Nunca en horas de clase and 45s containing It's downtown and I can see the rain (with English lyrics written by Douglas Meakin and Mike Fraser).
