The Common Linnets are a Dutch band that formed in 2013. The band members were originally individual artists Ilse DeLange and Waylon who have known each other for years before the formation of the duo.

DeLange has stated that the group is a platform for Dutch artists to make country, Americana, or bluegrass music and that the members will be changing. In May 2014, Waylon left the group and was replaced by American country singer Jake Etheridge.

Their song "Calm After the Storm", which is on their debut album The Common Linnets, reached second place in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 and gave the Netherlands their best result since their last winning entry in 1975. The song became a hit throughout Europe.

Ilse de Lange and Waylon are both from the eastern part of the Netherlands. In Dutch, people from this region are sometimes called heikneuters, referring to the songbird kneu. In English this bird is called a common linnet. So in fact, DeLange and Waylon are both songbirds from the eastern Netherlands. The name for the band is an idea from Dutch designer Rens Dekker, who is also responsible for the artwork design of their single and self-titled album.

"Calm After the Storm" is a song by Dutch duo The Common Linnets (Ilse DeLange and Waylon). It was chosen internally to represent the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Denmark. In the contest it placed second with 238 points. The song was first performed live, in an acoustic version, on 12 March 2014 on TV program De Wereld Draait Door. The studio version was presented on 13 March 2014.

After having taken the first place in the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen on 6 May 2014, the song finished in second place in the final on 10 May 2014, behind the winning song "Rise Like a Phoenix" by Conchita Wurst from Austria. This was the highest position for the Netherlands since it last won in 1975, and the highest score for the Netherlands in all the Eurovision contests.

On 18 May 2014, it reached number 9 in the UK singles chart, becoming 2014's highest charting Eurovision single, and the fourth non-winning Eurovision song from outside the UK to enter the top ten, the other songs being "Nel blu dipinto di blu" (Italy 1958), "Si" (Italy 1974) and "I See a Star" (Netherlands 1974).
