Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in Hertford in 1968.  The band is considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock,  although their musical approach changed over the years.  Originally formed as a progressive rock band, the band shifted to a heavier sound in 1970.  Deep Purple, together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath,

have been referred to as the "unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies".  They were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as "the globe's loudest band" for a 1972 concert at London's Rainbow Theatre, and have sold over 150 million albums worldwide.

Deep Purple have had several line-up changes and an eight-year hiatus (1976–1984). The 1968–1976 line-ups are commonly labelled Mark I, II, III and IV.  Their second and most commercially successful line-up featured Ian Gillan (vocals), Jon Lord (keyboards, backing vocals), Roger Glover (bass), Ian Paice (drums), and Ritchie Blackmore (guitar). This line-up was active from 1969 to 1973, and was revived from 1984 to 1989, and again from 1992 to 1993.

The band achieved more modest success in the intervening periods between 1968 and 1969 with the line-up including Rod Evans (lead vocals) and Nick Simper (bass, backing vocals), between 1974 and 1976 (Tommy Bolin replacing Blackmore in 1975) with the line-up including David Coverdale (lead vocals) and Glenn Hughes (bass, vocals), and between 1989 and 1992 with the line-up including Joe Lynn Turner (vocals).

The band's line-up (currently featuring Ian Gillan, and guitarist Steve Morse from 1994) has been much more stable in recent years, although keyboardist Jon Lord's retirement from the band in 2002 (being succeeded by Don Airey) left Ian Paice as the only original Deep Purple member still in the band.

Deep Purple were ranked number 22 on VH1's Greatest Artists of Hard Rock programme  and a poll on British radio station Planet Rock ranked them 5th among the "most influential bands ever".  The band received the Legend Award at the 2008 World Music Awards.  Deep Purple (specifically Blackmore, Lord, Paice, Gillan, Glover, Evans, Coverdale and Hughes) were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

Deep Purple - When Blind Man Cries

"When a Blind Man Cries" is a song by British rock band Deep Purple, originally only available as the B-side of the single "Never Before", released in 1972. It was recorded during the Machine Head sessions in December 1971.

According to Ian Gillan, "it’s just an example, for example if you think of the phrase «if a blind man cries» then its pretty sad, those who are disadvantaged tend to be less complaining than those who are able bodied".

Deep Purple - Lalena

"Laléna" (also spelled "Lalena") is the title of a composition by Donovan for whom it was a Top 40 single in the autumn of 1968, reaching #33 on the Hot 100 in Billboard.

In 2004 Donovan revealed that the song was inspired by the actress Lotte Lenya and that the song's lyrics, addressed to a societally marginalized woman, were Donovan's reaction to Lenya's character in the film version of The Threepenny Opera:

“   She's a streetwalker, but in the history of the world, in all nations, women have taken on various roles from priestess to whore to mother to maiden to wife. This guise of sexual power is very prominent, and therein I saw the plight of the character. Women have roles thrust upon them and make the best they can out of them, so I'm describing the character Lotte Lenya is playing, and a few other women I've seen during my life, but it's a composite character of women who are outcasts on the edge of society.   ”

"Laléna" was recorded in a September 1968 session at Olympic Studios produced by Mickie Most, session personnel being Harold McNair on flute, Bobby Orr on drums, Danny Thompson on bass with the Royal Philharmonic strings; John Cameron was the arranger. Donovan was not working toward an album when he recorded "Laléna", having completed the tracks which would comprise his The Hurdy Gurdy Man album in April 1968; that album and the single "Laléna" both were issued in the US in October 1968 (Donovan was at this time unable to have product released in the UK due to a contractual dispute). The single was also a hit in France reaching #22.

Donovan's performed the song on December 8, 1968, on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, along with two other tunes: "Happiness Runs" and "I Love My Shirt".

"Laléna" made its first album appearance in 1969 on Donovan's Greatest Hits and was a bonus track on the 2005 CD reissue of The Hurdy Gurdy Man.

In 1975 Donovan recorded a version of the song with Marc Bolan in Munich which has been lost.

In 1978 a bootleg emerged which featured Donovan performing the song in a studio with Paul McCartney on acoustic guitar: this tape was likely made November 1968 at EMI Studios London where McCartney was producing tracks for Mary Hopkin's Postcard, an album on which Donovan played guitar.

Deep Purple - Soldier of Fortune

"Soldier of Fortune" is a blues rock ballad written by David Coverdale and Ritchie Blackmore and originally released on Deep Purple's 1974 album Stormbringer. Though Deep Purple has never released the song as a single and it has never placed on the record charts, it has developed a cult following over the years, and cover versions have been released by Whitesnake, Opeth, Black Majesty.

The Opeth cover was included as a bonus track in the "Special Edition" release of Ghost Reveries (2006) and was subsequently released as a single in March 2007, which is available from iTunes. Roadrunner Records lists Opeth's version among their 13 wildest covers, calling it a faithful cover while adding Mikael Åkerfeldt's "unexpectedly soulful vocals."

Deep Purple - Black Night

"Black Night" is a song by British hard rock band Deep Purple, first released as a single in June 1970 and later included on the 25th Anniversary version of their 1970 album, In Rock.

The song became a hit following its release, peaking at No. 2 on UK charts, and to this day remains Deep Purple's highest charting UK single.

It topped the charts in Switzerland, and is one of only two singles from the band to chart in Ireland, peaking at No. 4, thus making it the group's only Irish Top 10 hit. It was also the first single penned by the band.

Deep Purple - Burn

"Burn" is both the opening track and the title track of the first album by Deep Purple Mark III; co-written by new vocalist David Coverdale and the time serving Ritchie Blackmore, it runs to 6 minutes 5 seconds, and features some typically blistering lead guitar from the man in black. According to the Jerry Bloom biography Black Knight... the music was inspired by the Gershwin brothers standard "Fascinating Rhythm".

Like the rest of the album, "Burn" was recorded at Montreux, Switzerland, in November 1973. Although Coverdale wrote the lyrics, they could just as easily have been penned by Blackmore, whose fascination with the Middle Ages, witchcraft and the supernatural is reflected in this tale of a bewitching female. The song became a regular with the band for the next two years.

Though Blackmore was the band's main songwriter, he enlisted vocalist David Coverdale, who had only recently joined the band to help. Coverdale recalled to Kerrang! May 30, 2009: "I was a complete unknown but I was involved in writing 'Burn' from the start. Ritchie was obviously the chief composer but I was given a cassette tape of the songs-in-progress and sent back to the north of England to work on the lyric with Glenn Hughes."

The radio edit single was cut down to 3:42.

Deep Purple - Anthem

Co-written by vocalist Rod Evans and keyboard player Jon Lord - who also arranged the strings - "Anthem" is a very fine lachrymosal ballad about love lost. Running to 6 minutes 31 seconds, it is the second track on the band's second album, The Book Of Taliesyn.

With Evans sounding like Elvis, and Ritchie Blackmore contributing a timely lead guitar solo, this is further evidence - as if any were needed - that Deep Purple would have been just as big if they had not changed the line up after their eponymous third album, although their particular brand of progressive rock would have taken them in an entirely different, and some would say entirely more fascinating direction.

Deep Purple - Strange Kind of Woman

"Strange Kind of Woman" is a song by British rock band Deep Purple that was originally released as a follow-up single after "Black Night" in early 1971.

The song also became a hit, peaking at #8 on UK charts, the 1996 remix by Roger Glover later appeared on the re-release of their 1971 album Fireball, the original version can be found on various Deep Purple compilations. Although not part of the Fireball recording sessions, "Strange Kind of Woman" was included on the US and Canadian editions of the album, in lieu of the UK version's track "Demon's Eye".

The B-side song, "I'm Alone", was later released on The Deep Purple Singles A's and B's as well as the 25th anniversary reissue of Fireball.
