Charles Aznavour, stage name of Chahnourh Varinag Aznavourian (Armenian: Շահնուր Վաղինակ Ազնավուրեան; Paris, 22 May 1924), is a singer-songwriter, actor and diplomat of Armenian origin French.
Known by the nickname of Charles Aznavoice, it is also called the "Frank Sinatra of Europe". Awarded the Legion of Honor for the luster given France is Armenia's ambassador to Switzerland from February 12, 2009.
Aznavour sings in seven languages and has sold over 300 million records worldwide.
Born in Paris, France, May 22, 1924 by Micha Aznavourian, a native Armenian immigrant to Akhaltsikhe (in modern Georgia), son of the cook of the governor of Armenia , and knar Baghdassarian, immigrant Armenian native of Smyrna (in modern Turkey), the daughter of wealthy traders, survived the Armenian genocide .
From a very young age it is entered by the parents in the Parisian theatrical world. It starts the artistic activity at the age of nine years already by the stage name Aznavour art. His lucky break comes in 1946, when he was discovered by Édith Piaf, which leads him on tour in France, the United States and Canada. If in 1950 it became famous on the French-speaking market, six years after it becomes a real star thanks to the Olympia exhibition and the song Sur ma vie, which arrives in first position for four weeks.
In the sixties Aznavour reinforces his reputation with a string of hits, starting with You t'laisses aller (1960), ranked first in France for three weeks, Il Faut Savoir (1961), prior to 15 weeks, continuing with The mom (1963), which in February 1964 comes in first place, Et Pourtant, first for five weeks, for Me Formidable (1964) and Que c'est sad Venice (1964), La Bohème (1965), which in 1966 comes first for three weeks, ending with Désormais (1969).
The seventies were opened with a controversy over his tax exile in Switzerland. In this period the artist intensified his appearances on the Italian market, proposing in Italian version also some of his old "workhorse".
It allowed him most of his songs are about love and in his long career he has written over 1000. The fact that sings in seven languages (French, English, Italian, Neapolitan , Spanish, German and Russian) of performing all over the world becoming famous everywhere. He sang at Carnegie Hall and in all the major theaters of the world, a duet with international stars like Nana Mouskouri, Liza Minnelli, Sumiva Moreno, Compay Segundo, Celine Dion, and in Italy, with Mia Martini and Laura Pausini.
In Italy he has collaborated with Giorgio Calabrese for almost all Italian versions of his songs, and partly with Sergio Bardotti, until the mid-seventies; later he collaborated with Lorenzo Raggi and in 1989 with Sergio Bardotti and Nini Giacomelli for the whole album and CD Moments yes, no moments. He was in the Festivalbar 1972 with What they do not do more (song later became the soundtrack of one of the White Mill spot); also he participated as a guest out of the race at the Sanremo Festival in 1981, presenting the piece then passes, and at the Sanremo Festival in 1989 with the song Moments yes, no moments.
