Hans-Ulrich Wiese began his career in the 1960s as a singer in a Beat group (The Bats, later renamed The Mad Bats). For his mother he had sung a band with some songs, which accidentally fell into the hands of the music producer Leo Leandros . He recognized the potential of the young singer and produced some singles with him, but they remained unaffected. In the summer of 1971 the single Monika landed on the second place in the German charts.

This title was based on the patriotic Bulgarian pop song Moja strana, moja Bulgaria by Emil Dimitrov . Also with the two following singles I dream with open eyes of you (place 3, 1972) and you do not have to cry (place 10, 1972) he succeeded. However, Leo Leandros quickly lost interest in him because he concentrated on the career of his daughter Vicky Leandros and those of the up-and-coming Demis Roussos .
