Hugo Strasser (* 7. April 1922 in Munich-Schwabing ; † 17th March 2016 in Munich-Trudering [1] ) was after the Second World War in Germany a swing and jazz musicians of the first hour. His orchestra was known for his dance music , especially by the album number dance record of the year and the musical sound and timing -Vorgabe many Dance World Championships .

Strasser's father, a verbeamteter school janitor, came from a farming family in Jetzendorf , his mother from Schrobenhausen . His first public appearance was Strasser age of seven at the "Deutsche Stunde in Bayern" - the predecessor of the Bavarian Radio . He played the piece grandmother on his harmonica . [2] At age 16, he came to the Academy of Music in Munich. In his eighth semester (1940) he was conscripted. But he did not have to participate actively in the war as a soldier, but played with soldiers' chapels in Szczecin and later in the Ruhr area. [3] After the war he played jazz in American clubs in Munich and other Bavarian cities, including the June 1945 to December 1945 in the upper house in Passau for the local US Infantry Division . From 1949 he worked as a saxophonist and clarinetist, founded in 1948 Max Greger - sextet , which was later expanded into a dance orchestra.

In 1955 he founded his own, 16-member dance band, with whom he performed until 2016 at numerous events ball, as among other things the Carnival balls in the Deutsches Theater München . The last ball that Hugo Strasser played in the Deutsches Theater was the ball of the stars on January 30, 2016. His sound was decisive for Strasser's success. The result was that the Clarinet was the first trumpet, similar to the Glenn Miller movement Mostly one octave lower, and of course also used as a soloist. Strasser's clarinet was the "voice" of his orchestra. A great advantage for this famous Strasser sound was that his arrangers were always also musicians of his orchestra. Particularly noteworthy are the 2001 late tenor saxophonist Werner Tauber, trombonist Hans Ehrlinger (1931-2010), the trumpeter Etienne Cap and 2012 deceased guitarist Dirk Schweppe. 2008, there was the orchestra next Strasser clarinet of five saxophones, three trumpets , three trombones , keyboards , guitar , bass and drums . Although the orchestra has existed for more than five decades, there has been hardly any change in personnel. Thus the first alto saxophonist and clarinetist Hans Wolf (* 1927) led Strassers saxophone set from 1957 to 2009, his successor was Werner Bernklau.

As early as 1956, Strasser and his orchestra accompanied the first dance tournaments. The following decades, he professionalized the dance music together with his band. Dancers and dancers of the standard and Latin American dances loved his music. In dance tournament circles, he was unsurpassed as the probably best dance orchestra in the world. The dance legends and 13-time world champion Bill and Bobbie Irvine declared: "When Hugo Strasser is standing on the microphone accompanied by his orchestra, and we dance to his sounds, it is as if we were hovering over the floor. For us, Hugo Strasser is the best dance director in the world! ". Was particularly successful Strasser also with the production of the dance record of the year .

With his orchestra he worked among others in the ZDF-entertainment show music trumps with Peter Frankenfeld and in numerous TV programs with Lou van Burg as we make music , sing with me - dance with me and Music makes everything better with it. Together with Dieter Hildebrandt and Klaus Havenstein were Hugo Strasser and his Orchestra in the 1960s and 1970s in the legendary New Year's cabaret Schimpf before 12 the laughter and Schießgesellschaft on stage.

Hugo Strasser was also successful as composer and arranger. Well over 500 melodies come from his pen.

At a concert on his 65th birthday founded Strasser formation Hot Five . In addition to Strasser were Martin Schmid (bass), Uwe Gehring (guitar), Ladia Base (piano and arrangement) and Werner Schmitt (drums).

Since 2000, he toured with Max Greger († 2015) and Paul Kuhn († 2013) and Swing legends with the SWR - big band , among others with A Tribute to Glenn Miller through the country. Together with Greger, Strasser went on a regular tour. In January 2009, he and Max Greger and Bill Ramsey as Swing legends in the Stuttgart Liederhalle concert. Guest Stars were the Kessler Twins . 2013 he performed with the Aichacher swing band Crazy Oak Big Band , the concert came to a birthday greeting. [4] [5] Hugo Strasser played since the ball season 1955/1956 to 2016 a total of 60 years in the Deutsches Theater in Munich and many other places in Germany to pass evenings with his dance orchestra. In 2016, just a few weeks before his 94th birthday, Strasser had been involved in the Ballnacht at the Deutsches Theater for many years. [6] He made his last appearance on February 28, 2016 Unterhaching. On March 17, 2016, Hugo Strasser died of the consequences of a bladder cancer. [7] He was buried anonymously on a Kempten cemetery.
