Red Hot Chili Peppers, also sometimes shortened to The Chili Peppers or abbreviated as RHCP, are an American funk rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1983. The group's musical style primarily consists of rock with an emphasis on funk, as well as elements from other genres such as punk rock and psychedelic rock. When played live, their music incorporates elements of jam band due to the improvised nature of much of their performances.

Currently, the band consists of founding members vocalist Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea, longtime drummer Chad Smith, and former touring guitarist Josh Klinghoffer. Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the best-selling bands of all time with over 80 million records sold worldwide, have been nominated for sixteen Grammy Awards, of which they have won six, and are the most successful band in alternative rock radio history, currently holding the records for most number-one singles , most cumulative weeks at number one  and most top-ten songs on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. In 2012, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The band's original line-up, originally named Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, featured guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons, alongside Kiedis and Flea. Because of commitments to other bands, Slovak and Irons did not play on the band's self-titled debut album (1984). Slovak performed on the second and third albums, Freaky Styley (1985) and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987), but he died from a heroin overdose in 1988. As a result of his friend's death, Irons chose to leave the group.

After short-lived replacements at guitar and drums, John Frusciante and Chad Smith joined in 1988. The line-up of Flea, Kiedis, Frusciante, and Smith was the longest-lasting and recorded five studio albums beginning with Mother's Milk (1989). In 1990, the group signed with Warner Bros. Records and recorded the album Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) under producer Rick Rubin. This album became the band's first commercial success, but Frusciante grew uncomfortable with it and left abruptly in 1992 in the middle of the Blood Sugar Sex Magik Tour.

After two temporary guitarists, Dave Navarro joined the group in 1993 and played on their subsequent album, One Hot Minute (1995). Although commercially successful, the album failed to match the critical or popular acclaim of Blood Sugar Sex Magik, selling less than half as much as its predecessor. Navarro was fired from the band in 1998.  Frusciante, fresh out of drug rehabilitation, rejoined the band that same year at Flea's request.

The reunited quartet returned to the studio to record Californication (1999), which became the band's biggest commercial success with 16 million copies worldwide. That album was followed three years later by By the Way (2002), and then four years later by the double album Stadium Arcadium (2006), their first number-one album in America. After a world tour, the group went on an extended hiatus. Frusciante announced he was amicably leaving the band in 2009 to focus on his solo career. Klinghoffer, who had worked both as a sideman for the band on their Stadium Arcadium tour and on Frusciante's solo projects, replaced him. The band's tenth studio album, I'm with You, was released in 2011 and topped the charts in 18 different countries. The band released their eleventh studio album, The Getaway, in 2016. The album was produced by Danger Mouse, marking the first time since 1989's Mother's Milk that the Red Hot Chili Peppers had not worked with Rubin,  and topped the charts in ten different countries.

"Aeroplane" is a song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers from their 1995 album One Hot Minute. It was the third single released from the album and a music video accompanied its release. Although the song was left off the band's Greatest Hits album, the music video was included on the accompanying DVD.

Despite its dark lyrical themes it is regarded as the most accessible and upbeat song on One Hot Minute, with a funk slap bass line and child choral vocals from Flea's daughter Clara and her classmates. The second verse of the song refers to American band Mazzy Star's song "Into Dust" and its lead singer Hope Sandoval with the lyrics "Hey girl, I'm turning into dust again/My melancholy baby/The star of Mazzy must/push her voice inside of me".

On the CD single, the live B-sides "Backwoods" and "Me and My Friends" incorrectly list John Frusciante and Chad Smith as co-writers of the songs. Both songs were written with Hillel Slovak and Jack Irons before John Frusciante and Chad Smith joined the band.

The single peaked number 8 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart where "My Friends" hit number 1 and "Warped" hit number 7. It was the only crossover hit from the album hitting number 30 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart where the other 2 singles failed to do. It was also the highest charting single in the UK from the album, peaking at number 11.

Californication is the seventh studio album by American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was released on June 8, 1999,[2] on Warner Bros. Records and was produced by Rick Rubin. Californication marked the return of John Frusciante, who had previously appeared on Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik, to replace Dave Navarro as the band's guitarist. Frusciante's return was credited with changing the band's sound altogether, producing a notable shift in style from the music recorded with Navarro.

The album's subject material incorporated various sexual innuendos commonly associated with the band, but also contained more varied themes than previous outings, including lust, death, contemplations of suicide, California, drugs, globalization, and travel.

Californication is the Chili Peppers' most commercially successful studio release internationally, with over 15 million copies sold worldwide, and more than 6 million in the United States alone. As of 2002, the album had sold over 4 million copies in Europe. The record produced several hits for the band, including "Otherside", "Californication" and the Grammy Award-winning "Scar Tissue". Californication peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard 200.

The record marked a significant change in style for the band: Rolling Stone's Greg Tate noted that "while all previous Chili Peppers projects have been highly spirited, Californication dares to be spiritual and epiphanic".  Another critic, Billboard's Paul Verna, mentioned that the album brought out "the group's softer, melodic side," as opposed to their previous six albums.

"Dani California" is a single from the American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers' ninth studio album, Stadium Arcadium. The single was first made available at the iTunes Music Store and then was officially released on May 2, 2006. The international radio premiere was April 3, 2006, when Don Jantzen, from the Houston radio station KTBZ-FM, played "Dani California" continuously for his entire three-hour program.

The single debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 24 and peaked at number 6, becoming the band's third single (after "Under the Bridge" and "Scar Tissue") to enter the top-ten. In addition, "Dani California" became the second song in history (after R.E.M.'s 1994 hit "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?") to debut at number 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart,

where it spent fourteen straight weeks topping the chart. The single also charted at number 1 on the Mainstream Rock charts, where it spent twelve straight weeks on top. The song won two Grammy Awards, one for Best Rock Song and the other for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. It also marked the band's joint-biggest UK hit to date along with "By the Way", peaking at number 2 in the UK Singles Chart, being kept out of number 1 by Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy".

Snow ((Hey Oh))" is a song by American band Red Hot Chili Peppers from their 2006 double album, Stadium Arcadium. The song was released as the follow-up single to "Tell Me Baby" on November 20, 2006 and became the band's third straight number one hit on the Billboard Modern Rock chart, a spot it held for five straight weeks. The single was their 11th to top that chart, giving the band the all-time record for any artist on that chart, a record they still hold to date and extended in 2016 to 13.

Vocalist Anthony Kiedis states that the track is "about surviving, starting fresh. I've made a mess of everything, but I have a blank slate—a canvas of snow—and I get to start over."

On June 28, 2012, at the band's concert at Goffertpark in Nijmegen, Netherlands during the I'm with You Tour, the band performed the song for the first time since the end of the Stadium Arcadium Tour nearly five years earlier.

"Otherside" is a song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, released in 2000. It was the third single from their album Californication, and confronts the battles addicts have with their prior addictions. The single was highly successful peaking at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, the fourth highest ever for the band; and number one on the US Modern Rock Tracks, which was, at the time, the fifth for the band. The song remained at number one on this chart for 13 consecutive weeks, one of the longest runs at the top of that chart.

This song refers to one of the band members, Hillel Slovak who died of a heroin overdose on June 25, 1988. This song talks about his struggles from this addiction. The name of the song, "Otherside", is also used to say "afterlife".

Although it is sung by Anthony Kiedis, it is supposed to be Slovak's voice and his perspective towards the situation. This song talks about how Slovak knows how much the drug has affected him and how he must kill himself to end his addiction. This song also shows his struggles to end this addiction by saying, "I yell and tell it (drugs) that it's not my friend; I tear it down tear it down, and then it's born again." His constant struggle is also shown in the music video which shows a man waking up and then finding himself in the same position at the end of the video which means that it is a cycle that never changes and that never will change. The video also shows his struggles by having a scene where the man (Slovak) is fighting against his shadow which shows that he was initially fighting with himself due to the addiction.

The music video has also been interpreted differently in the past; some sources speculate that the beginning and end scene are one and the same, and that the events between them are flashbacks outlining the protagonist's (Slovak's) journey to this state.

This song is not only a commentary of Slovak's struggles but also demonstrative of the adverse effects of drug use as a whole.

"Scar Tissue" is the first single from the American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers' seventh studio album Californication, released in 1999. It is one of their most successful songs, spending a then-record 16 consecutive weeks on top of the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart, as well as 10 weeks at the top of the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and reached number 8 on Billboard Hot 100 Airplay. It peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In the UK, the song reached number 15 on the UK Singles Chart. It won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 2000. The song is notable for its mellow intro guitar riff and for its slide guitar solos throughout. Guitar World placed the guitar solo 63rd in its list of the "100 Greatest Guitar Solos".
