Dean Martin (born Dino Paul Crocetti; June 7, 1917 – December 25, 1995) was an Italian-American singer, actor, comedian, and film producer. One of the most popular and enduring American entertainers of the mid-20th century, Martin was nicknamed the "King of Cool" for his seemingly effortless charisma and self-assurance.

He and Jerry Lewis were partners in the immensely popular comedy team Martin and Lewis. He was a member of the "Rat Pack" and a star in concert stages, nightclubs, recordings, motion pictures, and television. He was the host of the television variety program The Dean Martin Show (1965–1974) and The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast (1974–1985).

Martin's relaxed, warbling crooning voice earned him dozens of hit singles including his signature songs "Memories Are Made of This", "That's Amore", "Everybody Loves Somebody", "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You", "Sway", "Volare", and "Ain't That a Kick in the Head?".

"Everybody Loves Somebody" is a song written in 1947 by Sam Coslow, Irving Taylor and pianist Ken Lane.

Although written almost twenty years earlier, by 1964 the song had already been recorded by several artists – including Frank Sinatra – but without much success. Lane was playing piano for Dean Martin on his Dream with Dean LP sessions, and with an hour or so of studio time left and one song short, Lane suggested that Martin take a run at his tune. Dean was agreeable, and the small combo of piano, guitar, drums and bass performed a relatively quiet, laid back version of the song. (Coincidentally, Martin had sung it almost 20 years earlier on Bob Hope's radio show in 1948.)

Almost immediately Martin re-recorded the song for his next album, this time with a full orchestra and chorus. His label, Reprise Records, was so enthusiastic about the hit potential of this version they even titled the LP Everybody Loves Somebody to capitalize on it.

Although still a major recording artist, Martin had not had a Top 40 hit since 1958. With the British Invasion ruling the U.S. charts, few had hopes that an Italian crooner who had been singing mainly standards for almost 20 years would sway many teenagers. Martin resented rock n' roll, and his attitude created conflict at home with his 14-year-old son Dean Paul Martin, who like many teenagers at the time worshipped pop groups like The Beatles. He told his son, "I'm gonna' knock your pallies off the charts,"  and in August 15, 1964 he did just that: "Everybody Loves Somebody" knocked the Beatles "A Hard Day's Night" off the number one slot on Billboard, going straight up to the top of both the Billboard Hot 100 and the "Pop-Standard Singles" chart,  the latter for eight weeks.

It ultimately replaced "That's Amore" as Martin's signature song, and he sang it as the theme of his weekly television variety show from 1965 until 1974. The song has become so identified with Martin that later versions are invariably compared to his take.

As an apt description of the power of the song in Martin's life, the words "Everybody Loves Somebody" appear on his grave marker in Los Angeles.

"Things" is a song which was written and recorded by Bobby Darin in 1962. It reached #3 in the US, #2 in the UK, and #3 in the first ever official Irish Singles Chart, published by RTÉ in October 1962. However, there had been an Irish Top 10 before 1962, published in the Evening Herald from February 1959. As a result, "Things" actually peaked at #2 in the "unofficial" Evening Herald Chart.

In 1962, Darin began to write and sing country music, with hit songs including "Things". It was the final Darin single released on the Atco Records unit of Atlantic Records before he began recording for Capitol Records. While vault material would continue to be issued on Atco, Darin would later return to Atlantic Records. The song was sung by Dean Martin and Nancy Sinatra in the 1967 TV special Movin' with Nancy, starring Nancy Sinatra, which was released to home video in 2000.

A cover of the song by Anne Murray from her 1976 album Keeping in Touch peaked at #12 on the adult contemporary chart.

Other songs from that period: "You're the Reason I'm Living" (US #3), and "18 Yellow Roses" (US #10). The latter two were on Capitol Records, which Darin joined in 1962, before returning to Atlantic four years later.

Singer Robbie Williams recorded a version of the song for his 2001 swing album Swing When You're Winning.

Phantom of the Opera film actress Emmy Rossum did a cover of "Things" on her 2013 album Sentimental Journey, which peaked at 92 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.

"Under the Bridges of Paris" is a 1913 popular song with music written by Vincent Scotto, the original French lyrics (entitled "Sous les ponts de Paris") by Jean Rodor (1913), and English sections of lyrics added by Dorcas Cochran (1952) resulting in the released version (1954) containing both French and English sections.

Background[edit]
Recordings by both Eartha Kitt and Dean Martin charted in the United Kingdom in 1955, but failed to chart in the United States, though both were subsequently released as LP album tracks as well.

The recording by Eartha Kitt with Henri René and his orchestra and chorus was made in New York City on October 25, 1953. It was released by RCA Victor Records as catalogue number 20-5502 (in USA)[1] and by EMI on the His Master's Voice label as catalogue number B 10647. Kitt's recording appears on her 1954 album That Bad Eartha.

Michel Legrand recorded a jazz trio version of the song for his Paris-themed album of 1960, Legrand Piano. It was also performed by Polish singer Violetta Villas during her Las Vegas shows in late 60s.

"Nel blu dipinto di blu" (Italian pronunciation: [nel ˈblu ddiˈpinto di ˈblu]; literally "In the blue that is painted blue"), popularly known as "Volare" [voˈlaːre] (meaning "To fly"), is a song recorded by Italian singer-songwriter Domenico Modugno. Written by Franco Migliacci and Domenico Modugno, it was released as a single on 1 February 1958.

Winning the eighth Sanremo Music Festival, the song was chosen as the Italian entry to the Eurovision Song Contest in 1958, where it won third place out of ten songs in total. The combined sales of all the versions of the song exceed 22 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most popular Eurovision songs of all time and the most successful Sanremo Music Festival song ever.

It spent five non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 in August and September 1958 and was Billboard's number-one single for the year. Modugno's recording subsequently became the first Grammy winner for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1958.

The song was later translated in several languages and it was recorded by a wide range of performers, including Bobby Rydell, Dean Martin, Al Martino, Jerry Vale, David Bowie, Cliff Richard, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, Dalida, Gipsy Kings, Chico & the Gypsies, Deana Martin and Barry White.

A Winter Romance is a long playing album recorded by Dean Martin between July and August 1959 and released on November 16 of the same year. The backing orchestra was conducted by Gus Levene. While not exclusively a Christmas album, it features several songs associated with Christmas as part of its larger winter theme. It was Martin's only holiday-themed album for Capitol Records. He would, however, later record The Dean Martin Christmas Album after moving to Reprise Records.

The original artwork featured a picture of Martin embracing a fetching young woman. At the same time, he is throwing a passing flirt at a second, attractive woman.

"Carolina in the Morning" is a popular song with words by Gus Kahn and music by Walter Donaldson, first published in 1922 by Jerome H. Remick & Co.

The song debuted on Broadway in the elaborate (and risqué) musical revue The Passing Show of 1922 at the Winter Garden Theater by William Frawley[citation needed] (who later sang it in Paramount Pictures' original version of "The Lemon Drop Kid" in 1934, on an episode of I Love Lucy, and the season 3 episode Evening with a Star of My Three Sons, where it generated moderate attention). Vaudeville performers incorporated it into their acts and helped popularize it.

Notable recordings when the song was new were made by such artists as Marion Harris, Van & Schenck, Paul Whiteman and the American Quartet.

"Carolina in the Morning" gradually became a standard, being revived regularly as a popular song into the 1950s. Al Jolson recorded it on June 11, 1947[2] and he featured it in the film Jolson Sings Again (1949). Danny Winchell had a hit with his version in 1952.[3]

Other artists to have later successes with the song included Bing Crosby (included in his album A Southern Memoir), Dean Martin, Jimmy Durante, Dinah Shore, Judy Garland, and Danny Kaye. In 1957, Bill Haley & His Comets recorded a rock and roll version. Freddy Cannon recorded this song on his debut 1960 album The Explosive Freddy Cannon.

It was also covered by Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore on The Dick Van Dyke Show.

"You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You" is a popular song written by Russ Morgan, Larry Stock, and James Cavanaugh and published in 1944.

The song was first recorded by Morgan and has been covered by numerous artists. It is best known in versions by Dean Martin, who recorded it for Reprise Records in 1964, and by The Mills Brothers.

Dean Martin's version spent 9 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 25,[1] while reaching No. 1 on Billboard's Middle-Road Singles chart,[2][3][4] and No. 28 on Canada's CHUM Hit Parade.[5]

It was the B-side to Frankie Vaughan's hit single "There Must Be a Way", which broke into the UK top ten.

A cover by Ray Price peaked at number 60 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in 1986.[6]

Deana Martin recorded "You're Nobody 'til Somebody Loves You," in 2006. The song was a hit for her father, Dean Martin. The song was released on her album Memories Are Made of This in 2006 by Big Fish Records.

"I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter" is a 1935 popular song with music by Fred E. Ahlert and lyrics by Joe Young.

It has been recorded many times, and has become a standard of the Great American Songbook. It was popularized by Fats Waller, who recorded it in 1935 at the height of his fame.

It is one of several songs from the Harlem Renaissance featured in the Broadway musical Ain't Misbehavin'.

American Public Media's business-news program, Marketplace, uses a portion of Fats Waller's version to open its weekly letters-from-listeners segment.

"That's Amore" is a 1953 song by composer Harry Warren and lyricist Jack Brooks. It became a major hit and signature song for Dean Martin in 1953. Amore (pronounced [aˈmoːre]) means "love" in Italian.

The song first appeared in the soundtrack of the Martin and Lewis comedy film The Caddy, released by Paramount Pictures on August 10, 1953. In the film, the song is performed mainly by Dean Martin, with Jerry Lewis joining in and then followed by the other characters in the scene. It received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Song of that year, but it lost to "Secret Love" from Calamity Jane starring Doris Day.

The track that was used for the single released by Capitol Records was recorded on August 13, 1953, (Session 3098; Master 11694-6), with the orchestra conducted by Dick Stabile, at Capitol Records' studios at 5505 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, California. On November 7, 1953, Martin's record of the song, with "You're the Right One" (which was recorded at the same session as "That's Amore") on the flip side, peaked at #2 on the Billboard charts.

The song was kept from the #1 spot when Les Paul and Mary Ford's Capitol Records single "Vaya Con Dios" returned to the #1 spot after being knocked out by Stan Freberg's Capitol Records single "St. George and the Dragonet", which had been #1 for the previous four weeks, after "Vaya Con Dios" had been #1 for the nine previous weeks.[citation needed]

The song remains closely identified with Dean Martin. That's Amore was used as the title for a 2001 video retrospective of Martin's career; and his son, Ricci Martin, titled his 2002 biography That's Amore: A Son Remembers Dean Martin.[2] As an iconic song, "That's Amore" remains a secondary signature song.

Many artists have covered this song, including Alma Cogan, who sang it on the BBC radio programme Take It From Here on December 31, 1953, and Connie Francis, who sang an Italian adaptation of the song on her 1960 album More Italian Favorites.

Dean's daughter Deana Martin recorded her version of "That's Amore" in 2006. The song was released on her album Memories Are Made of This in 2006 by Big Fish Records.

"¿Quién será?" is a bolero-mambo written by Mexican composer Luis Demetrio, who sold the rights to fellow songwriter Pablo Beltrán Ruiz.  Beltrán recorded the song for the first time with his orchestra in 1953. The English version, "Sway", with lyrics by Norman Gimbel has become a standard in both the pop and jazz repertoire. The first version to achieve considerable success in the United States was recorded by singer Dean Martin with the Dick Stabile orchestra in 1954.

In 1954 the English lyrics were written by Norman Gimbel  and recorded by Dean Martin backed by Dick Stabile's orchestra. This recording reached number fifteen on the Billboard magazine best-seller chart and number six on the UK chart. The single was released with the B-side "Money Burns a Hole in My Pocket" (Jule Styne, Bob Hilliard) in the US, while the British version was backed by "Pretty as a Picture" (Johnny Anz).

This same version was recorded by Dean's daughter, Deana Martin, on her first studio album released on 2006 by Big Fish Records, Memories Are Made Of This .
