Demis Roussos (IPA: [demis rusos], in Greek: Ντέμης Ρούσσος), at the Artemios Ventouris-Roussos (IPA: [ardemios venduris rusos]) (Greek: Αρτέμιος Βεντούρης-Ρούσσος; Alexandria, Egypt, June 15, 1946 - Athens, 25 January 2015) was a Greek singer and bassist.

Demis Roussos was able to express the Hellenic past and the beauty of the lands where he lived through a poetic and gentle song, lent to very different genres, from progressive rock to disco music, to the many variations of pop.

Born in Egypt from parents of Greek origins, he returned to his native country after the loss of all family property, following the 1956 Crisis of Suez.

In his youth Roussos had learned solfeggio and had learned to play guitar and trumpet, becoming also a solo singer in the choir of the Byzantine church of Alexandria in Egypt.

In Greece, Demis Roussos entered different musical groups (The Idols, Minis, Stormies, We Five and above all Aphrodite's Child), before starting his solo career.

The Aphrodite's Child group, which has been part of their origin until the breakup, has produced hit singles such as It's Five O'Clock, Rain And Tears, Spring, Summer, Winter And Fall, I Want To Live, etc, and an album, 666, considered by the public and critics as a masterpiece.

The keyboardist of Aphrodite's Child, Vangelis Papathanassiou, will become famous composer of soundtracks with the name of Vangelis (notable among others: moments of glory, Blade Runner, Alexander).

Demis Roussos also appeared in Vangelis solo albums. One of his great success was Race to the End, a vocal adaptation of the main theme of the soundtrack of Moments of Glory (Chariots of Fire). His solo career reached its peak in the seventies: he won the 1971 Festivalbar with We Shall Dance, who finished fourth in Austria. The single Forever and Ever was first in the charts of many countries (also in the Official Singles Chart with Extended play The Roussos Phenomenon in 1976), second in the Netherlands and fourth in Austria in 1973. Other hits were My Friend the Wind Netherlands for two weeks and seventh in Germany in 1973, My Reason first in the Netherlands for three weeks in 1972, Lovely Lady of Arcadia that in the Schönes Mädchen aus Arcadia version arrives first for three weeks in the Netherlands, second in Switzerland, sixth in Germany and seventh in Austria in 1973 and Goodbye My Love, Goodbye first in Switzerland for 12 weeks and in Germany, second in Austria and third in Norway. Someday Somewhere was very well known, and in 1974 it came second in the Netherlands, Auf Wiederseh'n sixth in the Netherlands in 1974, Perdoname sixth in the Netherlands in 1975, and Happy to Be on an Island in the Sun fifth in the Official Singles Chart in 1975, When Forever Has Gone second in the UK in 1976 and also a version of Lost in Love by Air Supply, which arrives fourth in the Netherlands in 1980.

His "Prophet I will not be" won numerous awards, until it was included in the musical encyclopedia of the Benevento marsupial editions.

He was among the passengers of the TWA flight 847 hijacked on June 14, 1985. Sensing a turning point in his life, Demis Roussos embarked on an operation to relaunch his image with the LP Time, which received a fairly good success and with the single from Dance of Love disco. In 1988 the single Quand je t'aime arrives third in France and in 1990 On écrit sur les murs fourth in France.

The nineties saw further substantial releases: he agreed with BR Music in the Netherlands to produce Immortal, Serenade and In Holland, using a variety of ethnic instruments and electronic styles.

Demis Roussos continued to record and perform live until shortly before his death. In the spring of 2002 he toured the United Kingdom. In the same year he dueled with Ivana Spain in the song Tears of Love, inserted in the album of the singer Woman.

On September 19, 2008 he was among the guests of the RAI broadcast The best years and thanked the Italian public because in Italy he began his career as a soloist. Great return to the best years in the evening of October 31 and in the final one of December 5, 2008; in the following editions, he reappeared in the episodes of November 5 and December 17, 2010: in the latter he repeated his great success Forever and ever.

A long time sick, he died at an Athens clinic on January 25, 2015 at the age of 68.
