Jerry Lee Lewis (born September 29, 1935) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and pianist, often known by his nickname, The Killer. He has been described as "rock & roll's first great wild man."

A pioneer of rock and roll and rockabilly music, Lewis made his first recordings in 1956 at Sun Records in Memphis. "Crazy Arms" sold 300,000 copies in the South, but it was his 1957 hit "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On" that shot Lewis to fame worldwide. He followed this with "Great Balls of Fire", "Breathless" and "High School Confidential".

However, Lewis's rock and roll career faltered in the wake of his marriage to his 13-year-old first cousin once removed when he was 22 years old.  He had minimal success in the charts following the scandal, and his popularity quickly eroded.

"Roll Over Beethoven" is a 1956 hit single by Chuck Berry, originally released on Chess Records, with "Drifting Heart" as the B-side. The lyrics of the song mention rock and roll and the desire for rhythm and blues to replace classical music. The title of the song is an imperative directed at the composer Ludwig van Beethoven to roll over in his grave in reaction to the new genre of music that Berry was promoting. The song has been covered by many other artists, including the Beatles and the Electric Light Orchestra. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number 97 on its list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

"Roll Over Beethoven" is one of the most widely covered songs in popular music – "a staple of rock & roll bands", according to Koda – with notable versions by Jerry Lee Lewis, the Beatles and the Electric Light Orchestra.
