Herb Alpert (born March 31, 1935) is an American musician most associated with the group variously known as Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, or TJB. Alpert is also a recording industry executive, the "A" of A&M Records, a recording label he and business partner Jerry Moss founded and eventually sold to PolyGram.

Alpert also has created abstract expressionist paintings and sculpture over two decades, which are publicly displayed on occasion. Alpert and wife, Lani Hall, are substantial philanthropists through the operation of the Herb Alpert Foundation.

Alpert's musical accomplishments include five No. 1 albums and 28 albums total on the Billboard Album chart, nine Grammy Awards, fourteen platinum albums, and fifteen gold albums. Alpert has sold 72 million records worldwide.

Alpert is the only recording artist to hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop chart as both a vocalist ("This Guy's in Love with You", 1968), and an instrumentalist ("Rise", 1979).

"Spanish Flea" is a popular song written by Julius Wechter in the 1960s with lyrics by Cissy Wechter.

The song is best known from an instrumental version by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, released as a B-side to the single "What Now My Love" and on their 1965 album Going Places.

The album was a No. 1 hit in the U.S. and the single peaked at #27 on the Billboard Hot 100, with its A-side reaching No. 24 and gaining a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental. "Spanish Flea" featured Alpert's trumpet over a Latin rhythm backing.

In the United States, the song is closely associated with the long-running game show The Dating Game, for which it served as the "Bachelor's Theme".

"This Guy's in Love with You" is a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and recorded by Herb Alpert.

Although known primarily for his trumpet playing as the leader of the Tijuana Brass, Alpert sang lead vocals on this solo recording, arranged by Bacharach.

"The Lonely Bull (El Toro Solitario)"  is a song by Sol Lake recorded by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass among others. The Herb Alpert single represents the first release on A&M Records.

It became a hit (US #6) and title song to the album The Lonely Bull, released in December 1962. Its original title was "Twinkle Star".

While experimenting with the sound of an overdubbed trumpet, Herb Alpert recorded this song in his garage. The single and album recordings of the song were recorded at Conway Recorders in Hollywood by members of The Wrecking Crew,  California and featured the sounds of a crowd cheering "Ole" inside a bullfight arena in Mexico, as well as the sounds of the trumpets announcing the matador before he enters the bullring. The song features a mandolin, a bass guitar, drums, and a wordless chorus, featuring a solo soprano. A video for the song was filmed in 1967 inside the Toreo de Tijuana bullring.

"Rise" is an instrumental written by Andy Armer and Randy 'Badazz' Alpert, and first recorded by trumpeter Herb Alpert. The instrumental track was included on Alpert's solo album Rise and released as a single in 1979. It reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in October of that year and remained in the top position for two weeks.

Herb Alpert thus became the first (and only) artist to reach the top of the Hot 100 with a vocal performance ("This Guy's in Love with You", 1968) as well as an instrumental performance. "Rise" also spent one week atop the adult contemporary chart. "Rise" was successful on the other charts, peaking at number four on the R&B chart[1] and number seventeen on the disco chart.

The recording also received a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Songwriters Andy Armer and Randy 'Badazz' Alpert were both nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition.
